One of the ways we measure student academic progress at Huntley is PAT testing. This testing is used at the beginning of Term 1 to determine each student’s learning level and identify the areas their teachers should focus on for improvement. At the end of term 3 these tests are repeated and the results compared with term 1.
PAT tests generate Stanines, which are nationally scaled scores divided into nine levels of achievement, with the lowest performance level being stanine one and the highest stanine nine.
This year’s test results indicate the impressive gains made by Huntley year 7 and 8 students in 2018. They reflect the benefits not only of our small class sizes but also the individualised and small group teaching we put in place to cater to specific learning needs.
In Mathematics by the end of term 3, 38% of Huntley year 7 students achieved a Stanine 9 result putting them in the top 4% in New Zealand. This compared to 24% achieving that level at the start of 2018. Similarly year 8 students all made gains in their testing which shifted the mean Stanine for that year group from 5.4 to 6.1. The New Zealand average stanine is stanine five.
Not all students arrive at Huntley equipped with good learning skills and habits. We work hard to help students set learning goals and we provide a learning support teacher who can work 1 - 1 and with small groups. Every year we help children who have been struggling with their learning. This year 100% of the year 8 students who started the year below average for Mathematics with Stanines of 1-3 ended in the average bracket with Stanines of 4 and 5.

In reading and comprehension results our students made us equally proud. Our Year 8 students achieved Mean Stanines of 6.1 and 6.4 for comprehension, vocabulary and reading. Meanwhile our year 7 cohort jumped from 18% of students in the top 4% for reading comprehension to an impressive 30% by term 3.
When we are asked by prospective parents what our academic focus is at Huntley, we describe our broad, holistic view. In our experience Huntley can offer the ideal learning environment both inside and outside the classroom. It starts with providing nutritious meals, plenty of activity, supervised prep and morning reading for boarders and it’s underlined by our culture of learning always trying hard, and celebrating success. At the end of the day we want our students to have the best possible preparation for secondary school.
